2 TIMOTHY 1

A Picture Of Influence

The Background Of This Letter •Paul is writing from a Roman prison where he knows that his life will end soon.

Timothy is serving as the pastor of the church at Ephesus, a people Paul loved deeply.

Paul writes to Timothy to encourage him as he serves God to be faithful, diligent, and to never be

ashamed of what he knows about the truths of God’s word.

The Relationship of Paul and Timothy To Timothy, a beloved son: - v.2

without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day… - v.3

greatly desiring to see you… - v.4

I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you… - v.5

Paul has been Timothy’s mentor and brother in Christ and now he is encouraging him to stay the course.

The Reminder From Paul

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:6-7

Stir Up: Rekindle or Reignite.

Gift of God: All of God’s children are gifted.

Don’t let fear overtake your faith.

Your faith is in what you already know!

The Remarkable Influences On Timothy

When I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. – 2 Timothy 1:5

Heritage of Influence (The faith that Timothy had came from the faith of his family)

Handing down of Influence (From Grandmother to mother to son to others)

How Can We Hand Down Our Faith?

Through Exhortation (emphatically urging someone to do something) They taught Timothy.

But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures…  2 Timothy 3:14-15

Am I Teaching My Faith To My Family?

How Can We Hand Down Our Faith?

Through Example

Which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice. – v.5

Dwelt: To be lived in.

Their faith not only lived in them, but they lived out their faith!

Am I Living Out My Faith In My Family?

How Can We Hand Down Our Faith?

Through Excellence

When I call to remembrance the genuine (sincere) faith… - v.5

Their faith was not hot and cold, the sincerity of it influenced Timothy to live his faith out in the same way!

How Would My Family Define My Faith?

The Results Of That Influence

I am persuaded is in you also. – v.5

Persuaded: I know it to be true because I have seen it with my own eyes.

The family faith that Timothy saw pictures of in the lives of his grandmother and mother now lived

also in him!

A PERSONAL QUESTION

AM I BEING AN INFLUNECE TO THOSE AROUND ME?
